WHO Provides Cambodia 3,000 Doses of Medication to Treat and Prevent Bird Flu

PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Health of Cambodia has received 3,000 doses of medication to treat and prevent the spread of of avian influenza (bird flu) from the World Health Organization (WHO).

On Tuesday, 28 February 2023, the Ministry of Health, represented by the Director of Combat and Infectious Diseases, received 3,000 doses of Tamiflu (oseltamivir) for the treatment and prevention of avian influenza.

The drug will be used to respond to the H5N1 bird flu outbreak in Prey Veng and other potential provinces in Cambodia.

The Secretary of State of the Ministry of Health, Dr Or Vandine, previously shared that after the H5N1 bird flu caused the death of an 11-year-old girl died in Prey Veng province on 26 February, only one other case has been detected so far. The girl's father tested positive for the H5N1 virus and was admitted to the district hospital for treatment, however, he quickly received a negative test result by the morning of 27 February. The man will remain in the hospital to complete his treatment as prescribed.

The Ministry of Health continues to urge citizens to be vigilant and maintain personal safety by washing hands regularly with soap and clean water, avoid making any contact with sick or dead birds, and only eating food that has been well cooked.
